Commands and various Teachings of Christ

Like newborn babies,

thirst for the pure milk of the word

so that by it you may grow in your salvation.

Surely you have tasted that the Lord is good! 1 Peter 2:2,3

Some of the following scriptures are explicit commands of Jesus. Some of them are more like prescriptive behaviours as Christ taught them. Whatever Jesus said though, we need to take careful notice and ensure that we are applying them to our lives.

The Great Commission

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.  Matthew 28:19,20

He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.’ Mark 16:15-18

He told them, ‘This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.’ Luke 24:46,47

Let your light so shine before men

In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:16

Love your enemies

But I tell you: Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you,...  Matthew 5:44

If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ lend to ‘sinners,’ expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.  Luke 6:32-36

Be perfect

Be perfect, therefore, as  your heavenly Father  is perfect.  Matthew 5:48

Seek first the Kingdom of God

But seek first his kingdom  and his righteousness, and all these things shall be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

Treat others, the way you want to be treated.

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.  Matthew 7:12

Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:31

Forgiving others

For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins,  your Father will not forgive your sins. Matthew 6:14-15

Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Luke 6:37

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but  seventy-seven times. Matthew 18:21,22

And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may  forgive you your sins. Mark 11:25

New commandment – love one another

A new command I give  you:  Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must  love one another.  John 13:34

As the Father has loved Me, so have I  loved you. Now remain  in my love.  John 15:9

Keep commandments to abide in his love

You are my friends if you do what I command.  John 15:14

Don’t lay Treasures up on earth

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:19,20

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Luke 12:33,34

Judge not

Do not judge, or you too will be judged.  Matthew 7:1

Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Luke 6:37

Fear not

So do not be afraid of them... Matthew 10:26

Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Luke 6:36

If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.  Matthew 5:41

Turn the other cheek

But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. Matthew 5:39,40

Let  your Yes be Yes or No be No

Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. Matthew 5:37
