Jesus the Son of God

Like newborn babies,

thirst for the pure milk of the word

so that by it you may grow in your salvation.

Surely you have tasted that the Lord is good! 1 Peter 2:2,3

The best selling fictional book of that came out a number of years ago is the Divinci Code by Dan Brown.
This book makes the claim that Jesus was not the Son of God. The chances are, that along with all the hype, you have heard what Dan Brown had to say. Lets be sure that we also find out what the Bible has to say about Jesus the Son of God.

Before we were born, we only existed in the mind of God.  We become real people when we were conceived and born.
However before Jesus was born around 2000 years ago, the Jesus the Son of God always existed along with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.
Jesus has been there from the beginning. In the book of Revelation in the Bible, we find out that one of the many names of Jesus is ‘The Word of God’ (see Revelation 19:13)

John, one of Jesus’ disciples, tells us that the Word was there from the beginning.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1
In other words, in the beginning was Jesus, and Jesus was with God, and Jesus was God.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14

When Jesus was born into this world, although his identity as the Son of God did not change, his attributes did.
As a small baby, he was totally vulnerable. No longer was he all powerful, all knowing and an ever present God. He needed his nappy changed (or whatever they used back then), he needed to be nursed with milk, he cried, he became totally dependant on his mother and earthly father to raise him.

Paul one of the first century church founders, wrote this about Jesus:
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:5-11

Everything Jesus did when was on earth, he did it as a man, as a human being (but the only perfect human being) He highlighted this when he often referred to himself as the Son of Man, rather than the Son of God. Miracles were done as a man having faith in the power of God, and by the Power of God’s Holy Spirit, not by Jesus doing the miracles because he was the Son of God.
Jesus needed to pray to communicate with the God the Father and get direction for his day to day activities. He did not know everything even though he was still the Son of God.
Though he was in the form of a man, his identitiy was still as the Son of God. Nothing could change who he was and always had been, however his function was in the capacity as the ‘Son of Man’.

It is vitally important to the very foundation of our Christian faith that we understand and recognise Jesus – not just as the perfect man – but also His identity as the Son of God.

Prophecies regarding the Messiah

There are many prophecies written about the Messiah, – Jesus fulfilled them all. For example:

Approximately 680 years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah prophesied and told of a virgin giving birth to a child known as Emanuel – which means ‘God is with us’.

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14

Approximately 710 years before Jesus was born the prophet Micah foretold the exact place where the ‘messaiah’ would be born.

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
      From everlasting.” Micah 5:2

What the bible says about Jesus the Son of God.

He was concieved by the Holy Spirit and born of a Virgin.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:18

And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. Luke 1:35
It is easy for skeptics to argue there is no proof of this ever taking place.
But think about this. He is the only person in history ever said to be born of a virgin. There is no debate about virgin birth over any other person!
For someone to be sinless, as Jesus was said to have been, then it makes absolute sense that his conception be from God rather than man. The virgin birth separates Jesus from being just another man.

– A voice from heaven gave witness that Jesus was the Son of God.

Matthew, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples writes :

And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Matthew 3:17

Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid. Matthew 17:1-6

Peter,(Jesus’ disiple) later writes of this experience he had with Jesus, the Son of God.

For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. 2 Peter 1:16-18

– Jesus himself said that he was the messiah and the Son of God

The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.”
Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.” John 4:25,26

But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”
Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. Matthew 26:63,64

– Jesus was resurrected from the dead and was exalted to the right had of God.

‘…which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.’ Ephesians 1:20-21

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, Hebrews 1:1-3

– The disciples of Jesus testified that he is the Son of God.

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us— that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:1-3

Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” Matthew 14:33

Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:16.

A revelation of Jesus the Son of God.

It is important to extend our vision and understanding of Jesus, from Jesus the Son of Man as he is primarily revealed in the gospel writings, and see him as the Almighty God that he truely is and who we have the privledge of serving.
Some people have a mental image of Jesus being a skinny man with a perplexed expression, with a sheep under his arm and being dressed in something that looks like a nighty. Read the below bible verses and allow them to paint a more fuller picture of the awesome reality of Jesus the Son of God. These verses are written by the apostle John, one of Jesus’ disciples. He wrote it after having a supernatural vision and revelation of Jesus.

Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. Revelation 1:12-18

Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:
KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Revelation 19:11-16
